Unlike lawyers, accountants and doctors, marketing consultants don’t even need a bachelor’s degree in marketing, let alone a trade license. You’ll find marketing consultants who majored in graphic design, English and accounting. There are marketing guys who used to be radio DJs, salespersons, office managers and journalists. Some have never even been to college. We even know of one whose actual training is in photography!

Make sure you research qualifications carefully before committing to a marketing consultant or consulting firm. We recommend you only use a consultant who has at least a bachelor's degree in marketing from a university with a highly rated business program. After all, would you allow yourself to be treated by a "doctor" who doesn't have a medical degree?
